ARGUMENTO: Em 1954, o marechal americano Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) e seu parceiro Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) são atribuídos para investigar o escape de um paciente no hospital de segurança máxima/prisão para loucos criminosos localizada na Ilha de Shutter. Uma vez na ilha, eles percebem que os funcionários do hospital e da prisão não estão realmente cooperando com a investigação deles. Parece que os funcionários estão escondendo um grande segredo e Teddy irá descobrí-lo. Teddy acha que se ele pudesse ver os registros, ele poderia acabar com o caso. Entretanto, a ilha é atingida por um vulcão, e os pacientes mais perigosos escapam e devem ser capturados. Isso dá a Teddy e Chuck a oportunidade de verificar algumas das construções que eles eram proibidos de ir. O que Teddy acha é a resposta que ele estava procurando.
